Talk Abstract
AI Revolution: Transformation of Health Education
Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming health professions education. Our team in IMU University uses AI to address longstanding challenges in feedback literacy and clinical skills training. Traditional approaches, such as standardized patients and scattered feedback mechanisms, are often costly, logistically complex, and lack scalability. We introduce two AI-powered educational applications developed at IMU University: Feedback IMU and TalktoPatient. These tools aim to enhance feedback literacy and provide scalable, immersive clinical simulation opportunities for healthcare students. Feedback IMU centralizes the feedback process, allowing students to request, view, and analyze feedback from tutors, peers, and supervisors. It utilizes AI to map feedback to Malaysian Qualifications Framework domains and generate personalized improvement plans. TalktoPatient offers an AI-powered virtual patient simulation designed for safe, remote practice of clinical, communication, and decision-making skills. It supports multiple languages and disciplines, including Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Nutrition and Dietetics, Psychology, and Chinese Medicine. The system features adaptive difficulty levels and AI-powered rubric-based grading of student-patient conversations. Development of these platforms required navigating several technical and pedagogical challenges. These include managing token limits, preventing AI hallucinations and persona bleed, ensuring clinical accuracy and maintaining data privacy. Despite these hurdles, both applications successfully demonstrate practical solutions for automating feedback analysis and providing accessible practice environments without the logistical constraints of human actors or expensive mannequins. These tools represent a significant advancement in health education. While AI cannot replace the nuanced guidance of human teachers, these applications effectively complement traditional teaching methods. They offer scalable, cost-effective solutions for feedback management and clinical skills training. Both platforms are freely accessible upon registration, supporting the democratization of quality health education resources.
